Tuolumne County Aquatic Masters swimmer, Kirby Smith, 70 scored top ten finishes at the recent National Senior Games in Birmingham, Alabama. The swim meet was held over four days, June 4-10 at the Trossplex Athletic Center.
Athletes over the age of 50, who had placed in the top four at the state championships were qualified to participate at the national meet. Along with the swimming, over twenty sports were contested during the two weeks of national competition.
Being a breaststroke specialist led Smith to a fourth place finish in the 100 breast, 5th in the 200 breast and 6th in the 50 breast in the 70-74 age division. Smith finished 15th in the very competitive 50 free.
Smith’s times in all three breast events were impressively within two seconds of his lifetime masters personal bests. His times were all faster than his qualifying times at the California State Senior Games held in June 2016 at the Pasadena Rose Bowl Aquatic Center.
